the Rhythmus Triptych

These three 4"x5" drawings were inspired by Hans Richter's film "Rhythmus 21", which was created over 100 years ago, and is one of the earliest abstract motion pictures of all time. I chose the three frames from this film that I found to be the most aesthetically pleasing, based on the arrangements of the geometrics as well as the "imperfections" on the film itself. I photographed each individual frame on my television screen from a paused dvd, then made xerox copies of the photographs, and then attempted to replicate those images in pen and ink, creating drawings four times removed from the original work of art.
